Summer programs offer opportunities to explore many new horizons
Aaaaah, summer vacation…no classes, no homework, no hassles.
But after about three or four weeks, you’ve done all there is to do—and life turns B-O-R-I-N-G. If that sounds like your summer routine, check out some programs available around the state that can help you break out of boring. (And, you can land some great scholarship money for college in the process!)
The Governor’s Scholars Program
The Governor’s Scholars Program is a
five-week program that offers Kentucky high school students the chance to
experience college life and grow
academically through enrichment courses, cultural and artistic events, and recreational
opportunities—all free of charge!
GSP participants live in dorm's on one of three college campuses during their stay and choose one of 25 different areas on which to focus, with choices ranging from agribusiness/biotechnology, architectural design and drama to film studies, international relations and politics. (Colleges hosting the program for 2008 include Bellarmine University, Centre College and Morehead State University.)
Students who complete the Governor’s Scholars Program automatically qualify for scholarships at 22 colleges and universities throughout the state, with some of those institutions offering full scholarships to GSP students.

For students who have a passion for the
arts, The Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) is a three-week, free summer
program that features an extensive schedule of workshops, field trips and classes with accomplished practicing professionals.
All high school sophomores and juniors are eligible to audition for the program, regardless of their formal training or involvement in school arts programs. Students are selected for the program based on talent, creativity, potential, dedication and discipline in the following areas: creative writing, dance, drama, instrumental music, musical theatre, visual art and vocal music.
GSA is held each summer on the campus of Transylvania University in Lexington, where students are housed in the university’s residence halls and have access to its classroom and rehearsal facilities.
Participants in GSA are eligible for scholarships at more than a dozen colleges and universities.
